It’s that time of year again when I’m already getting mailouts for South By Southwest

. For those of you who are not familiar with the conference/festival, it is one hell of a time. Turns out this year, they’re having a design contest for the t-shirts and they chose to run that it at the 99 Designs site. Everything I had seen on 99 designs before looked to be high quality and this contest is no different.

Head over to the 99 designs blog

to get your vote in for what design should be printed. Here are two of my faves that I noticed:

DBH 10K Final Four (0)

With only a couple of days left to vote on Design by Humans

‘ second annual 10K design contest the T Addict would like to present the final four contenders. I don’t mind following th pack and posting about this (like every other t-shirt blogger on the web) because everyone wins with this kind of dough. I hope the coverage encourages all the other design contests to pony up some real jack once a year. Here’s what we’ve got for the final four:

strawberry

This design by gloopz, called “SOS Straberry Flavour”, reminds me of a scene from 28 Days Later. The twist of course is that the guy in the biohazard suit is chowing down on an ice pop.

twilight_rain

As soon as I saw this design, entitled “Twilight Rain,” I knew it was by CollisionTheory. It’s got the same trademark look we’ve all grown to love. Based on the description, and the title, it looks like this shirt might be a reference to movie.

journey

“Journey to the City of No Horizon” by TangYauHoong is a really unique shirt. It’s cool how it runs the entire length of the shirt and uses the shirt itself so effectively as part of the canvas for the artwork. Very cool concept.

mecha

csj89′s “Mecha-Labaw” is a terrific all over print done as a massive representation of the Carabao, a type of Water Buffalo found in the Philippines. It’s really cool how the eyes stand out so much from the rest of the shirt.

So now that you’ve seen the Final Four hurry up and go vote on your favorite before it’s too late. Voting closes on August 23rd and according to DBH the shirts will be available for purchase on the day the winners are announced! At least we won’t have long to wait to snatch up these guys.

AS Colour’s Little Help Project (0)

If you have been thinking about starting a new t-shirt clothing line, would you like a $10,000 starter package to help you begin?.  The only catch is… you need to live in the Australasia area.  For those of you who don’t live in that area and are a little pissed that you can’t be involved, turn that frown upside down.  In the current economic climate, we all need to be supportive and give a little help.  And AS Coulour

, a T-shirt wholesaler based out of Australia and New Zealand, is doing just that.

I am hoping this kind of thing catches on with the t-shirt wholesaler’s across the world.  So what is it?  The Little Help Project

is a t-shirt design contest for the young designers in the Australasia part of the world.  The winner walks away with 400 t-shirts, custom printing and custom labeling to get their brand off the ground.  Entries for the contest close out this week, and they will be featuring those entries for the next month on their website. So Broder, Alpha, Staton, SanMar, etc….you guys need to take note and give back to the t-shirt designer/entrepreneur community that gives so much to you.

T-Shirt Contest Winners at Abduzeedo (0)

A design blog that we cover often, Abduzeedo

, just announced five winners out of 70+ entries in their own t-shirt design contest. I had posted about it before because the entries I saw were going to be so difficult to print on black shirts due to the artwork’s color complexities. Apparently the winners won’t be any different because 4 out of the 5 winners will require 4-color process printing (unless they go digital or transfer).

I am looking forward to seeing these as the finished product.  I will post again when they are available. In the meantime, you can see the winners by clicking on the picture:

Another T-Shirt Design Contest (0)

Only the market will tell us at what point the internet will reach saturation on websites based on t-shirt design contests.  One that I came across today and was unaware of, is a company called Itself

.  The problem with a lot of these new sites is that they take an already existing concept (crowdsourcing t-shirt production) and get dollar signs in their eyes.  What I mean by this is, the execution isn’t so great, because the plan was conceived with a motivation other than passion.  Itself doesn’t seem to suffer from that problem.

The thing that they are doing that appears to be a step in the right direction is following through with what they say they’re going to do.  The simple premise behind their site is to pay winning designers and to create t-shirts out of those designs.  I have seen a few sites lately that are making these claims, but you just aren’t seeing any new t-shirts in their shop.  To me, that is the biggest community killer you could do.  Itself has a few new shirts up, but they also back it up with their blog

, showcasing the new winners.

The most interesting thing I saw with their business model is they are producing their own t-shirts

.  I know you might be thinking that is an obvious decision considering Threadless does it, but they don’t have the Threadless bankroll or volume at this stage in the game.  I guess only time will tell, but so far so good….
