Jimiyo Takes Us to Church (0)

Published on May 11th, 2010. By

, under Advice .

If you haven’t heard of Jimiyo yet, then you must be new to the scene. The guy has been a t-shirt designing pioneer for quite some time now. He started out winning t-shirt design competitions on the regular and parlayed that into employment for TeeFury/Design By Humans as their art curator. In short, when Jimiyo speaks….we all listen.

He recently created a post at Emptees titled “How I Made $7500 in 3 Months With My Art

” where he lays out the different approaches to getting paid for your work. It shows the different outlets for sales and serves as an overall gameplan for distribution of your designs. A must-read for all t-shirt designers…

Jimiyo Goes Full Time with DBH (0)

Published on February 26th, 2009. By

, under Design by Humans .

I’m a little late to the party on this one but I just saw where designer extraordinaire, Jimiyo, has been hired full time at Design By Humans

. He is taking on a position that requires him to relocate to Irvine, Cali as the Art Director. This is a great example of the world being flat and that you can be noticed everywhere with a combination of some hustle, skills and the internet. Looks like this will be a great addition to an already solid team at DBH.

Good luck and congratulations Jimiyo

T-Shirt Designer Spotlight – Wotto (0)

Published on January 21st, 2009. By

, under Designer Spotlight .

What better designer to have in the spotlight after Jimiyo than to have another master of t-shirt design, Wotto. Craig Watkins is his birth name and designing is game. See what makes Wotto run this shizz.

What is your favorite part of design?

It has to be doodling ideas and trying to pour the mess out of my head onto a page. It’s great when a design comes out on paper close to how I visualized it. It doesn’t happen often but that’s what makes it so golden. I think the drawing stage is very important, there are way too many ‘illustrators’ out their just tracing stuff and not actually drawing.

How would you describe your style?

Dark. I like to draw characters that have a narrative, a life of their own. I like to create little stories and lives for my creatures. I know it sounds weird.

What inspires your work?

What doesn’t? Pretty much everything I look at. Artist wise I get inspired by painters like Joe Sorrel and street art has always played a part in my art work.

What are five websites that you can’t live without?

Teefury

Dekay Clothing
Design By Humans
Threadless
Emptees

What trends do you see developing in the future of t-shirt design?

I hope to see less 80′s inspired tees and I hope character design will remain popular. I donno about future trends, I try to steer away from mainstream design.

T-Shirt Designer Spotlight – Jimiyo (0)

Published on January 2nd, 2009. By

, under Designer Spotlight .

Talk about the Taddict bringin’ it with the first Designer Spotlight of 2009….none other than Jimiyo! I can’t think of a t-shirt design competition that he hasn’t put his mark on. The kid has skills, now see what makes his style go round:

What is your favorite part of design?

Near the end of finishing a design, after a significant time investment, there’s a point sometimes I step back and evaluate my design and think, “Hell Yeah.” That is a favorite part of designing. It’s doesn’t happen all the time unfortunately.

How would you describe your style?

Distinct, highly detailed linework using custom baroque style flowing embellishments woven throughout specific images of symbolic significance. Usually contains animals and quotes.

What inspires your work?

I receive inspiration from many other artists. Alphonse Mucha, William Bouguereau, HR Giger, Gerald Brom, Audrey Kawasaki, El Mac, the list is endless.

Also having to pay bills, inspires my work. Gotta get my one toof cleaned. Gettin some bling on that mutha.

What are five websites that you can’t live without?

Dear Computer

Merriam Webster
Boing Boing
TeeFury
Ffffound

What trends do you see developing in the future of t-shirt design?

I’m not really a maven regarding trends. I would say great blogs like… Taddict.com are better informed on the upcoming trends by certain cues they see being replicated in several designs.

As far as what I am going to do for 2009, my trend is going to be kicking ass, takin names, Yeeeeaaahhh. JOKES JOKES! Seriously though, I’m going to create some traditional acrylic paintings and digital illustrations next year and try to expand my market into different venues.

Candy cannon by daleedwinmurray

Probably one of the most under rated artist that I have seen lately. Dale’s work

is unique and creative and would love to see more work from this artist printed.

Awkward Charm by jimiyo

Another great design from the every so famous jimiyo

(Jimmy Benedict)  This to me is not his usual style (which is nice) and seems like he is taking some inspiration from user matihole (Matheus Lopes) with this piece. Absolutely love it!

What is Inside A Girl by dcastle8183

Nice concept from Derrick Castle (dcastle8183

) and I really like this guys style. Here is a quote if you are wandering where the design concept came from.

Haven’t we always wondered what is inside a girl? My mother told me it was sugar and spice but I don’t believe her. Some people have to find out for themselves…

Couloured fire dragoon by conker

A somewhat new artist to the scene but has been around on DBH for some time. I think the whole breathing out whatever design has been done before but this is a very nice take on that concept. Also look at the placement, it would truly make an awesome printed tee.

Surprisingly artist Jimmy Benedict lands 4th place @ Design by Humans (0)

Published on September 23rd, 2008. By

I seriously thought Jimmy (jimiyo

) would come in the top 3 (for the DBH 10k contest) at the least. I mean look at this design! Anyway as always congrats on the win Jim and glad you made it as a finalist, and yes I believe it was worth you time :)

Was all the work worth it? Not sure. The $1000 is definitely not worth the time investment, but then Is having participated and reached the top tier level of the contest worth the time investment? Because theoretically, many new eyes have been exposed to my name and work. Still feel Defeated, but elated it’s finally over. Now I can start workin!
