T-Shirt Designer Spotlight – Sven Palmowski (2)

Published on December 11th, 2008. By , under Designer Spotlight.

Many of you will recognize this t-shirt designer’s online handle more than his actual name…..he’s a.mar.illo! You can barely go to a t-shirt site these days and not see his influence. Read what makes his design what it is:

What is your favorite part of design?

Favourite part of design, hm… probably when you are working on a design and at one point you get a strong feeling that it´s going to be a good one, sort of a certain consciousness that what you are doing right now will have success in the future. which is not always the case;)

How would you describe your style?

It contains a bit of Dada, a bit of irony and it has very peculiar esthetics.

What inspires your work?

There are many things that inspire me: music, movies, and of course other artists work. When new ideas are needed, the best is going for a walk, city or countryside, whatever and I had some really good ideas in the bathtub too, haha;)

What are five websites that you can’t live without?

Emptees
Rumplo
Faesthetic
TeeFury
Viste Adecuadamente

What trends do you see developing in the future of t-shirt design?

I think in the past 2 years the market for graphic tees really opened up for art and even combined art and mainstream. I think this trend will continue and allow to do even more abstract or minimalistic artworks for the mainstream. In a few years the whole thing might slow down a bit, back to plain colours with no prints at all… but after that little crisis start as a new hype again soon. This is what my crystal ball told me;)

Shaun White Has Tees (1)

Published on December 10th, 2008. By , under T-Shirt Lines.

In honor of Shaun White’s Snowboarding video game in transit to me for Christmas, I checked to see what other goods he had. I had a feeling that I would find t-shirts in his online store and I just wanted to see what kind of designs he was working with. I figured there would be more selection than what was available. There are four options and they’re all from The White Collection by Burton. I guess the upside is the specialty prints because they had a true all over print option and one with gold foil print.

Hide Your Arms Is Hustling Hardcore (4)

Published on December 9th, 2008. By , under Cool Sites.

As I prepared my very first post of the day (the day is almost over), I was surfing the t-shirt blog space to see what was going on.  I came across one of our regular faves, Hide Your Arms, and was blown away by the work Andy had put in today.  That dude posted eight solid t-shirt related posts in one day.  That is some kind of grind.  Karl Long, the original t-shirt gangsta, might have found his heir to the t-shirt blogging throne.

There are serious props due to Andy and I’ll bet he is getting the growth he is looking for.  Now please slow down because you’re setting the bar too high for the rest of us.  ;)

The Hundreds X Lost Boys Collabo (0)

Published on December 8th, 2008. By , under T-Shirt Lines.

Did you know that Disney could be street too?  They can when it comes to this collaboration with The Hundreds.  The founders of The Hundreds have always been infatuated with The Lost Boys from Peter Pan and were approached by Disney to produce some street offerings.  Bobby Hundreds says in the video that it’s the largest project they have had as a brand.

A side bonus in the video is getting to watch graphic designers from Disney talk about the process of creating new characters for this project.  You can see a few images with Mickey Mouse having three eyes in the background.  I wonder what that was for?  Either way, pretty cool vid, and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished products.

KarmaLoopTV Is a Must See (0)

Published on December 8th, 2008. By , under KarmaLoop.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with KarmaLoop, one of the best places to start an introduction is KarmaLoopTV.  Karma Loop is one of the largest, if not the largest, sellers of streetwear on the Internet.  They sell close to $40 million a year worth of indie and street label apparel and accessories.  We haven’t covered these guys enough and plan to do so a lot more in the future.

They are still run by their founder, Greg Selkoe, and a general rule that he goes by is…” selling your goods to Target can be the kiss of death” as far as KarmaLoop is concerned. The future is much brighter than the company’s past, because Greg had to hustle like mad to get it to the point of where it is.  It is without a doubt a hustle that we can all learn from and hope to emulate.

Like I said, we have much more to come about KarmaLoop the company.  KarmaLoopTV however, is a daily broadcast of street news, hip-hop, and funny sketches that you won’t want to miss.  Like I said…a great place to start getting to know KarmaLoop.

Who Is Going to Make this T-Shirt? (2)

Published on December 7th, 2008. By , under General.

In case you missed Saturday Night Live last night, they had a very funny video that will be as popular as D**k In a Box. You might even could call this one D-In-A-Box 2.0…..watch it and then start the artwork for a t-shirt.

I am not sure how long YouTube will be allowed to keep the video up, so if it is down and you are searching the interweb for it…..search – “Jizz in My Pants“.

Coty Gonzales Gives You 10 Great Tips (1)

Published on December 6th, 2008. By , under T-Shirt News.

This was too good of a t-shirt post for me to not refer you to it. Coty Gonzales put together some really strong tips that he gathered from his regular Indie Tee Spotlights.  Pretty interesting stuff and certainly worth a looksee:

Interview with Greg Rivera at MashKulture (0)

Published on December 5th, 2008. By , under Mishka.

One of the bigger streetwear brands that you will never find in Target is called Mishka.  It is a brand out of New York City that focuses on the edgy look.  I want to do a bigger write up on them later, but for now, I wanted to introduce you to one of their founders. MashKulture posted an interview yesterday with one of their founders, Greg Rivera, and he speaks briefly about what motivates their ideas and themes for new collections.

I’ll cover their brand a little bit more in the future because I’m a fan of streetwear. In the meantime, read the interview to see what you can learn from it.

Go Media Vector Packs Are the Truth (1)

Published on December 4th, 2008. By , under General.

I know that title sounds a lot like I am going to set you up for an affiliate post, but that is hardly the case.  I was just casually browsing the Internet at some of my favorite sites and read a post by 5 Ones about the Grenade Gloves shoes coming out in Spring ’09.  They definitely look cool, but that isn’t why I am posting about shoes on a t-shirt blog.

The reason I am posting about the shoes is twofold.  For one, I am a fan of the brand because I can appreciate the creativity with their whole theme of being grenade/military related. The main reason however, was that I immediately recognized part of the artwork on the shoes and it surprised me a little. They definitely used clip art from a Go Media wings vector pack.  Don’t believe me?  Take a look for yourself:

There is a slight change in the circle, but the wings are the same and the overall look is undeniable.  I know some will frown upon this because the artwork wasn’t created from scratch, but I would like to point out the positive.  I just want the up-and-coming t-shirt designers and clothing line creators to see that they have access to some of the same resources as the big dogs.

I also want to give props to Go Media for continually pumping out solid vector packs that are good enough to be considered in major clothing lines.  And for the record, I will be buying a pair of these shoes at launch.  ;)

T-Shirt Blogging in the Design World (2)

Published on December 3rd, 2008. By , under T-Shirt Design.

Thanks to Liz at Pop Culture Tees, I was alerted to a t-shirt blog post at a major design blog.  The name of the post is 6 Great Tips on How to Prepare Artwork for T-Shirt Printing, and it came by way of the design blog – Just Creative Design. I love seeing these kind of posts at bigger blogs outside of our niche because it just sheds more light on the t-shirt world.  It is a great little tutorial/resource for t-shirt designers and those looking into printing t-shirts:
